Third molars (wisdom teeth) are the last teeth to develop. They grow inside the bone at the back of the mouth. If the jaws do not grow long enough the third molars stay trapped (impacted) inside the bone.
Impacted third molars can cause a number of problems including: a dull pain in the jaws; infection in the overlying gums; or damage to the tooth in front. Impacted lower wisdom teeth may also push other teeth forwards and make the lower front teeth become more crooked. In the rare occasion untreated impacted wisdom teeth may form a cyst.
Impacted wisdom teeth are best remove before they cause one or more of the above problems.
