Laser Dentistry

What is laser dentistry?

Laser dentistry is the use of lasers to treat a number of different dental conditions. It became available in clinical dental practice for procedures involving tooth tissue since 1989.

The term LASER is an acronym for ‘Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation’ first postulated by Albert Einstein in 1917

How does Laser Dentistry work?

The Dental Laser machine creates light energy in a very narrow and focused beam. This laser light can remove hard tissue like dental decays, and ablate soft tissues.

Dental lasers are used for:

  • Treatment of tongue tied and lip tied
  • Treat Gum disease – Diseased or inflamed gum tissue can be remove with minimal effect on the healthy tissue.
  • Reduce the tooth’s sensitivity to hot and cold food and drinks.
  • Reshaping the gums to create a more pleasing smile
  • Treat mouth ulcers – If you have a persistent ulcer or lesion in your mouth, lasers can be used to help reduce pain.
  • Removing soft tissue folds. Lasers can remove soft tissue folds from ill-fitting dentures without pain or sutures.

Benefits of using laser dentistry

  • Less pain
  • Less bleeding, as the laser promotes blood clotting.
  • Less bacterial infections because the laser sterilizes the area.
  • Less damage to the surrounding tissues allows wounds can heal faster
